Analysis

During the Grand Prairie Fire Department’s 100 Year Anniversary in 2017, the city’s fire fighters association would like to have the city’s historic 1939 firetruck restored for promotion uses.  This firetruck was the first new firetruck ever purchased by the city and has significant historic value to the city and its residents.  It was previously restored about 20 years ago by the city’s Facility Services Department, but is in need of a complete overhaul, including a new automatic transmission, engine, brakes, chrome, paint, wood restoration, and period-appropriate equipment and hoses, seats and dash.  A vendor who specializes in vintage vehicle restorations spent one week going through the truck in detail and places the estimate near $120,000.  Donations would be made to the non-profit Grand Prairie Hearts and Hoses to oversee and fund the work.  To have the truck restored by the November Centennial Banquet, work would need to begin as soon as funding is available.  Sports Corporation Board member and Councilman Jim Swafford is suggesting a $50,000 Sports Corp donation, with a matching donation of up to $35,000 to match funds raised by the fire fighters Hearts and Hoses association for the total needed.

Financial Consideration

$50,000 to be donated to Hearts and Hoses with an additional amount of up to $35,000 to match funds raised by Hearts and Hoses.
