Analysis
The City of Grand Prairie Landfill owns and operates a Type I Municipal Solid Waste Landfill with approximately 26 years of remaining life. This facility currently brings in 200,000 tons of material per year. Much of this waste is brought in by Republic Waste Services, who pays a tipping fee for commercial waste. The materials coming in from the residential areas does not bring in revenue from the tipping fee but is covered by the amount billed to each home on a monthly basis.
It is estimated that just over half of the material coming to the landfill is recyclable. Republic Waste Services currently allows residents the opportunity to recycle ferrous metals, paper, plastics, aluminum and cardboard. They do not provide recycling for clothing, shoes or small appliances.
The Solid Waste and Recycling Division is seeking approval to partner with Simple Recycling to offer these services to the community free of charge.
This presentation will fully describe the program, discuss anticipated quantities of materials diverted from the landfill and describe the proposed implementation timeline.
Financial Consideration
There is no charge for this service. A small revenue will be generated at the rate of $20 per ton.
