Analysis

Chapter 67 "Canvassing Elections," of the Texas Election Code states that the local canvass shall take place not earlier than the eighth day or later than the 11th day after the election.  The last day to canvass the votes of the May 6, 2017 election is May 18, 2017.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS, CANVASSING AND DELCARING THE RESULTS OF THE MAY 6, 2017 GENERAL ELECTION FOR PROPOSITION NUMBER ONE, REAUTHORIZATION OF A LOCAL SALES AND USE TAX FOR MAINTENANCE3 AND REPAIR OF MUNICIPAL STREETS; COUNCIL MEMBER, DISTRICT ONE; COUNCIL MEMBER, DISTRICT THREE; AND COUNCIL MEMBER, PLACE 7 AT LARGE

 

Whereas,                       on the 6th day of May, 2017 a General Election and a Special Election were held in the City of Grand Prairie, Texas, for the reauthorization of a local sales and use tax at the rate of one-fourth of one percent for maintenance and repair of municipal streets; Council Member, District One; Council Member, District Three; and Council Member, Place 7 at large; and

 

Whereas,                      such election was duly held and propert return of results made by those officials charged with the responsibility of holding such election; and

 

Whereas,                      the City Council in open session has canvasses such votes and determined that all returns are in proper order and the election correctly conducted;

 

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas that:

 

Section 1.  That the results of the special election for Proposition One for the reauthorization of a local sales and use tax at the rate of one-fourth of one percent for maintenance and repair of municipal streets are as follows:

 

                     3,843  FOR

 

                        600 AGAINST

 

The votes FOR Proposition One exceed the votes AGAINST and is hereby delcared passed.

 

Section 2.  That for the office of Council Member, District One:

 

                     Jorja Clemson received 547 votes and is hereby delcared the winner and elected to the office of Council Member, District 1.

 

SECTION 3.                     That for the office of Council Member, District Three:

 

                     Mike Del Bosque received 406 votes

                     Lila Thorn received 373 votes

 

                     Mike DelBosque received a majority of the votes and is hereby declared the winner and elected to the office of Council Member, District Three

 

SECTION 4.                     That for the office of Council Member, Place 7 at large:

 

                     Jeff Copeland received 2,259 votes

                     Kevin C. Toth received 514 votes

                     Aurelio Castillo received 1,090 votes

                     Wayne Ellis received 367 votes

 

                     Jeff Copeland received a majority of the votes and is hereby declared the winner and elected to the office of Council Member, Place 7 at large

 

Section 5.  That all election returns from the City voting precincts in which polling took place in the City of Grand Prairie and pertaining to the City election, the same are made part of this resolution (Exhibit A).

 

 

PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS, MAY 16, 2017.
