Analysis
During the recently completed National Endowment for the Arts Our Town Tile Mosaic Project in which a large art piece was installed near the Beltline Road and I-30 east bound frontage road Park & Ride facility, Artist Pamela Summers and trainees from the Weed & Seed Job Training Program for Ex-offenders created a handmade 4' x 8' tile art piece as part of their commercial thin-set tile training. Though the artist's contract required that she provide thin-set tile installation training, she, of her own initiative generously created a second art piece to demonstrate how to create hand-glazed tile before installing it. Her incredible commitment to this project combined with the additional initiative that she demonstrated has given the Job Training Program participants additional marketable skills.
Financial Consideration
The artist conducted the commercial thin-set tile installation and handmade tile workshop for the Weed & Seed Job Training Program participants in her personal studio, the Cliff House Studio and Gallery in Lake Worth. She used her own equipment and contributed all of the supplies, including the clay, glazes and kilns for firing the components of the artwork. The final artwork is valued at $20,000 and is being donated by Pamela Summers to the City.
