Analysis

The Main Library has been in the process of updating and renovating its interior to better meet the needs of its customers, residents and community for the past few years.  We’ve completed a south side and north side carpet, ceiling and lighting upgrade in 2014.  The Library provides free and equal access to connections, discovery and education for all people, regardless of age, means or background.

This phase will complete the physical changes to the building as we continue the conversion of passive to active by:

Reorganizing the children’s library to be a center for early literacy by enclosing it in glass, creating a wow factor at the entrance, leveling the theater floor, updating book stacks and furniture, adding interactive learning tools, and adding graphics and art as focal points, educational tools and added interest.

•    Reorganizing library floor plan to bring popular books and DVDs up front, move genealogy back, open up the computer section with smaller furniture and upright computers, create individual and group study rooms, create a new programming room, replace dilapidated furniture, replace antiquated book stacks, add signage, graphics, art and color to create an inviting, enlivened, educational space for books, computers, programs and people.

•    Creation of a non-leaking and larger book drop at existing west lobby vestibule; creating a new exterior door in Children’s for emergencies; and remodeling the restrooms throughout.

We bid the renovation and received five contractors interested in the job.  After checking references and comparing pricing, quality of work, time schedules and reputation, the low bidder Denco is recommended for the job.  The Library will close Jan-March for the remodel and host a big grand re-opening party to coincide with the Summer Reading Club kick off in late May.

We will also be presenting furniture selections at the December City Council meeting.
