Analysis
The replacement of stretchers and purchase of power load systems are a planned project for the FY 2015/2016. The Fire Department's Power Pro Stretchers, Stair Pro stair chairs and Power Load Systems are Stryker brand products. In keeping with the continuity of equipment throughout the department it is the Fire Department's recommendation to continue with the Stryker brand stretchers, load and lift systems. Stryker does not operate a distribution channel for this equipment and is a sole-source.
Manufacturer's recommendation is to replace stretchers every seven years at which time they release all responsibility to the owner. The replacement of four units would remove all 2007 models from our front line and standby fleet. The remaining units would be available as a last measure should we have a malfunction with our newer units. The cost for four replacement stretchers is $74,403.76 less $8,000 trade-in for four older Power Pro Cot trade-ins for a total of $66,403.76.
In 2014 implementation of the Power Load System began during the stretcher replacement process. The Power Load System, in conjunction with the Power Pro Stretchers, is an automatic stretcher loading system designed to reduce back injuries. The department tested two power load systems on two of the busiest ambulances in an effort to research the functionality and necessity of such a device. During this trial period the usefulness and practicality of these units have been realized and will therefore be essential in the well-being of our personnel for years to come. The cost to equip three units with the Power Load System is $71,622.90.
The Stair Pro stair chair is a stretcher device that aids in the lifting and moving of patients where stairs are present. The cost to replace two Stair Pro stair chairs is $6,359.60.
Grand total for the replacement of stretchers and purchase of power load systems is $144,386.26.
