Recommended Action
The City of Grand Prairie has established a Police Department to provide the citizens of Grand Prairie a first class public safety response to police emergencies and calls for service based on a Community Policing philosophy.
Analysis
The City of Grand Prairie has established a Police Department to provide the citizens of Grand Prairie a first class public safety response to police emergencies and calls for service based on a Community Policing philosophy.
Currently, the police department has 234 authorized Civil Service sworn positions consisting of 199 Police Officers; 23 Sergeants; eight (8) Lieutenants, three (3) Assistant Chiefs, and one (1) Police Chief. Subsequent to the approval of the Fiscal Year 2013 Budget, the Police Department was funded one (1) additional police officer position through a one-year Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Grant. The Grand Prairie Police Department's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit conducts commercial motor vehicle inspections and organizes public awareness campaigns regarding traffic safety.
Financial Consideration
The total amount of the grant is $230,952.00 with $21,264 cash match, which consists of $18,767 for salary and $2,497 for equipment and supplies (paid out of the Commercial Vehicle Fine Account) and $24,927 in-kind match. This grant was approved by the City Council on October 18, 2011.

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS, AMENDING ORDINANCE 9400-2012TO DEFINE THE NUMBER OF AUTHORIZED POSITIONS IN EACH CLASSIFICATION FOR FISCAL YEAR 2013 TO 235
WHEREAS, the City of Grand Prairie has established a Police Department to provide the citizens of Grand Prairie a first class public safety response to police emergencies and calls for service based on a Community Policing philosophy; and
WHEREAS, the department currently has 234 authorized positions, consisting of 199 police officers, 23 sergeants, 8 lieutenants, 3 assistant chiefs, 1 police chief; and
WHEREAS, the department was funded 1 additional Police Officer position.
WHEREAS, no temporary over hire positions have been approved for this budget year; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. THAT the total authorized sworn police department positions for the fiscal year 2013 is now 235 with 200 Police Officers, 23 Sergeants, 8 Lieutenants, 3 Assistant Chiefs, and 1 Police Chief.
SECTION 2. THAT this ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage, approval and publication and it is accordingly so ordained.
SECTION 3: THAT all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with this ordinance are hereby repealed.
