Analysis
Staff received notification from the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) regarding IH30 main lane and express lanes speed limit changes within Grand Prairie City limits.
Under the Transportation code, TXDOT utilizes the manual,“ procedures for establishing speed Zones” which is based on spot speed studies and the 85th percentile operating speed among other things for establishing speed zones. TXDOT has determined through a speed study that the existing environmental speed zone on IH30 main lanes and express lanes within Grand Prairie limits are not reflective of the 85th percentile operating speed. TXDOT is removing the Environmental Speed Limits on these roadways in Dallas Districts. As a result of this action the posted speeds on these roadways will be raised, TXDOT recommends the following posted speed limits for these roadways within Grand Prairie city limits and staff recommends amending Schedule II of the traffic register. The attached ordinance establishes the following speed limits:
IH 30
From Tarrant County line to Dallas County Line 6.5 miles / 70 MPH
Express Lanes
From Tarrant County line to Dallas County Line 6.5 miles / 75 MPH
Financial Consideration
There is no cost associated with speed zone ordinance since TXDOT will furnish and install the necessary signs for the posted speed limit changes.
