Analysis
Currently and for the FY 2015 the Fire Department consists of 202 authorized civil service positions plus 3 overhires to include 113 FireFighters, 36 Driver Engineers, 32 Lieutenants, 12 Captains, 6 Battalion Chiefs, 2 Assistant Chiefs, 1 Fire Chief. The overhire of 3 FireFighter positions will remain for the FY 2015 at the FireFighter rank bringing the overall total to 205 positions.
Fire Station 10 is scheduled for a late Spring 2016 opening. The 18 additional firefighters will be hired on July 13, 2015 and many will be sent to fire school at Tarrant College in order to staff Fire Station 10. During the first quarter of 2016, we will revise this ordinance to reflect the promotions for the fire station opening thus lowering the number of firefighters but raising the upper ranks. Overall, our authorized positions will stay at 220 plus the 3 overhires.
The consideration and continuation of the overhire program and future ordinances will be included annually during the budget adoption process.
Financial Consideration
Funding for the permanent authorized positions is part of the Fire Department's General Fund budget. Funding for overhires is available in the potential salary savings of the Fire Department's General Fund budget.
