Analysis
In April 2016, City Council approved the City Manager executing a contract with Dewberry Architects for the remodel of the Shotwell Library. A team of Library and Park employees had selected Dewberry after interviews with four firms selected from the seven firms who responded to a Request for Qualifications. Since then, Dewberry's lead architect has retired. No work had begun, and no funds are owed Dewberry. The team had selected Dewberry because of the retired architect and prefers to go a different direction at this time.
Expansion of the Library is scheduled in the Capital Improvement Project funding for 2017. Architectural fees for the project are allocated in the 2016 CIP. A new contract will be brought to the City Council in August.
Of emphasis in the expansion will be:
Creating more visibility for the library within the recreation center
Incorporating more space for programming, classes and story times
Reconfiguring customer service, front entrance, offices and layout to enhance customer experience
Financial Consideration
Funding in the Library Capital Projects Fund (402093) WO #01601903 (Expand Shotwell Library) will be released from the Dewberry contract.
