Analysis
On February 13, 2014, the Regional Transportation Council (RTC) approved approximately $28 million in federal funds for a program called Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP). This funding is to help pay for transportation projects other than building roads. A Call for Projects was issued with a deadline date of May 30, 2014. One of the areas that this funding can be used for is to construct sidewalks designated as “Safe Routes to School”. The Safe Routes to School program identifies and provides sidewalks along the path that children and students could safely use to walk to and from school.

The City of Grand Prairie and the Grand Prairie Independent School District jointly submitted four (4) sidewalk segments in this Call for Projects with The City of Grand Prairie agreeing to be the public sponsor and point of contact for these projects. The Grand Prairie City Council passed resolution #4695-2014 on May 20, 2014 in support of submitting these projects for consideration in the Call for Projects. The three (3) sidewalk segments listed below are moving forward at this time:

1. Matthew Rd. - east side from Alspaugh Ln. to Clark Trl.
2. Crestbrook Ln. - east side from Grenoble Dr. to Stonewall Dr., and
Stonewall Dr. - north side from Crestbrook Ln. to Ferndale Ln.
3. Beatty Dr. - northeast side from Woodacre Dr. to Brian Dr.

These segments of sidewalk were included in this Call for Projects because for various reasons (obstructions, slopes, retaining walls, utilities, etc...
