Analysis
On September 19, 2017, City Council approved funding agreement with North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) for traffic signal data sharing.
The automotive and intelligent transportation system industries have been working on various technologies that allow vehicles to communicate with infrastructure (V2I) as well as allowing vehicles to communicate to other vehicles (V2V). Both of these technologies will aid in the development of automated vehicles. The purpose of these technologies is to improve safety, traffic flow, and energy efficiency of vehicles.
The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) recently started an automated vehicle program. Staff has been working with NCTCOG to examine technologies that can help lead to automated vehicles. One of the first opportunities for public agencies to participate in the V2I arena is through traffic signal data sharing. This type of data sharing is just beginning. By approving this agreement, City of Grand Prairie will be part of helping this technology grow by being one of the public agencies nationally to share traffic signal data. Use of this technology is just one approach City of Grand Prairie will take to sustain a reliable transportation system in the future.
There is no cost to City of Grand Prairie to provide this data since the vendor, Traffic Technology Services, Inc (TTS), is responsible for the software acquisition and installation. The system requires the installation of a software module that enhances the current traffic signal software system already used by City of Grand Prairie.
