Analysis
The additional equipment (wind sensors) to be installed on all Outdoor Warning Sirens will make the City of Grand Prairie the first in the country to have the most robust Outdoor Warning Siren system allowing the ability to make quick, efficient and effecting warnings to our residents. By installing the wind sensors at each siren location we will be able to remotely monitor the actual wind speed which will allow the siren to activate automatically when the wind speed reaches dangerous criteria. By the individual siren activating itself based off the wind speed as well as any tornado warnings, several minutes can be saved verses having to manually active them. The time saved by automating the siren activation can directly relate to increased life safety based off the earlier warnings giving people more time to seek safety.
This all hazards Outdoor Warning Siren system is crucial in providing prompt emergency warnings to the general public that would be outdoors during an emergency. Currently the City has 26 Outdoor Warning Sirens spread within the city limits covering all major outdoor related event areas and neighborhoods. This project is in addition to the original CIP set up for the original outdoor warning siren system project where the sirens were upgraded and new sirens were installed. This project will be managed by the Office of Emergency Management and will provide the City with enhanced emergency warning capabilities.
