Analysis
The City of Grand Prairie has a rain and gauge system consisting of 22 gauges. The system provides real-time and stream data. The City's Stormwater, Public Works Streets Department, and Office of Emergency Management use the real-time data to determine locations of flooding and to dispatch crews to blockade these locations during and following storm events. This information is also used in deciding when evacuations are warranted.
The City's gauges follow ALERT protocol. The ALERT protocol sends readings via radio as data is collected. ALERT protocol is known for losing data due to data collisions that result in corrupted information. ALERT2 protocol also sends data via radio but establishes a specific time interval for each site and sensor to report data. The entire system would report data every three minutes and avoid data collisions. Reduced data collisions means more reliable data makes it to City staff in a timely manner. The City is interested in pursuing this grant to convert the gauges from ALERT to ALERT2 protocol.
This grant requires 50 percent local match. The total project is anticipated to cost $260,000.00, so the City's share would be $130,000.
