Analysis
Council authorized the remount of three (3) ambulances for the FY 2016/2017, this is the second (2nd) year the Fire Department has remounted ambulance boxes onto a new chassis. After the initial inspection of the units scheduled for remount they are returned to service for almost a year before they are taken out of service and sent to Frazer for the remounting. One unit is completed at a time. While in service, with continued use and weathering, we are finding that additional repairs and/or upgrades are needed by the time the unit is remounted. These additional repairs and/or upgrades come at an additional cost that is not initially accounted for during the initial inspection.
It is the Fire Department's recommendation to allow for a contingency of $4,000 per unit for such repairs and/or upgrades that were not accounted for during the initial inspection. Total contingency for these units would be $12,000 bringing the total capital cost for these remounts to $495,636.
Financial Consideration
Funding for the contingency funding is available by approving an ordinance transferring and appropriating $12,000 from the the unobligated fund balance in the Fire Capital Improvement Projects Fund (400591) to WO #01700703 (FY17 Ambulance Replacement) 68330 (other vehicles).
