Keep Grand Prairie Beautiful, a functional group within the Solid Waste and Recycling Division, has long partnered with the Grand Prairie Independent School District through a program titled “Green and Clean Campuses Program” or GCCP. This cooperative effort between the City and the school district provides educators with the tools necessary to encourage students to make a difference in their community by facilitating litter prevention, recycling and beautification. GCCP was first launched in 1998 with five campuses. It has grown over time to involve over 200 dedicated GPISD staff-members. Since 2015, the collaboration has strengthened to include award-winning educational tours of the landfill for ISD students. In 2017 alone, over 450 students benefited from this.
An outcome of these efforts is an increasing desire to recycle in the schools. Unfortunately, an audit revealed that the schools lack critical infrastructure to provide these recycling opportunities. This grant will provide funding for 265 high-quality, heavy-duty recycling containers to be deployed in 42 schools. As part of the bin deployment, there will be a plastics pollution awareness campaign in which “A Plastic Ocean” will be featured at the Uptown Theater on November 3, 2018.
