Analysis
For the past four years the City Council appointed Historical Commission has not met. No new appointments have been made. After the centennial of 2009, the Commission saw less and less business to conduct and we went from monthly to quarterly to bi-annual to no meetings a year.
The Commission's primary duty is to advise the City Council on matters of historic preservation and approve applications for historic markers. No applications have come in since 2009. The Historic Organization, which is a membership organization open to the public, would welcome assuming the duty of approving historic markers. A city staff person could act as a liaison to the Organization.
Financial Consideration
The city could still oversee and pay for the installation of historic markers through the Historic Preservation account in the Hotel Motel Tax.
