Analysis
For several years garbage and recyclable materials have been collected by the company currently doing business as Republic Waste Services, Inc.  Twice each week bagged garbage is collected from Grand Prairie homes and recycling collected once per week in 18-gallon bins.  As population density has increased in Grand Prairie, the number of new homes has been disproportionately distributed in the community with the highest concentration occurring in the south.  This population shift necessitates route balancing as the local landfill is situated at the far northern border of Grand Prairie.
Republic Waste Services has requested and affirmative action by the City Council would authorize a modification the community's collection schedule to balance the number of routes per day factoring in proximity to the landfill, number of houses and historic traffic conditions.
This item was presented to the Finance and Government Committee on August 5, 2014 and at a City Council Briefing on August 19, 2014.
Financial Consideration
Staff-time required to execute the marketing and communications plan necessary to notify residents of the impending changes is available in the FY 2013/2014 Solid Waste and Recycling Budget.
