Analysis
The City of Grand Prairie has established a Police Department to provide the citizens of Grand Prairie a first class public safety response to police emergencies and calls for service based on a Community Policing philosophy.
Currently, the police department has 273 authorized Civil Service sworn positions consisting of two-hundred and thirty (230) Police Officers (including 4 over-hire positions); twenty-nine (29) Sergeants; eight (8) Lieutenants; two (2) Deputy Chiefs; three (3) Assistant Chiefs, and one (1) Police Chief.
With the addition of six (6) Police Officer positions and one (1) Police Sergeant position, the Department staffing will now consist of 276 authorized Civil Service sworn positions, which will be allocated as two-hundred and thirty-two (232) Police Officers; thirty (30) Sergeants; eight (8) Lieutenants; two (2) Deputy Chiefs; three (3) Assistant Chiefs, and one (1) Police Chief.
Financial Consideration
The new positions will be funded in the Crime Tax Fund.

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS, AMENDING ORDINANCE 10128-2016 TO DEFINE THE NUMBER OF AUTHORIZED POSITIONS IN EACH CLASSIFICATION FOR FISCAL YEAR 2018
WHEREAS, the City of Grand Prairie has established a Police Department to provide the citizens of Grand Prairie a first class public safety response to police emergencies and calls for service based on a Community Policing philosophy; and
WHEREAS, the department currently has 273 authorized positions, consisting of 230 Police Officers, 29 Sergeants, 8 Lieutenants, 2 Deputy chiefs, 3 Assistant Chiefs, 1 Police Chief; and
WHEREAS, the continuation of this ordinance will be renewed annually during the budget process or as needed;
